5 gifts for Dad under $60

June 13, 2007 Posted by Tara in : New Products, Other Stuff, Reviews, Tips , add a comment

With Father’s Day rapidly approaching, I decided to to put together a mini gift guide for those of us who want to show our appreciation for dad without breaking the bank. Each one of these gifts is under $60 and is user friendly, as we know sometimes parents just don’t understand. The first gift is one I know for sure my own dad would like:

Recharge your Wii: Penguin United Wii Rechargeable Battery Combo

June 12, 2007 Posted by Beth in : Reviews , 1 comment so far

wii_dock.jpgI just spent countless hours of my life playing Super Paper Mario on my Wii. What better way to test out the Penguin United Wii Remote Charging Dock and 2x Rechargeable Battery Combo? With normal gameplay on the Wii, you can wear out your Wii remote batteries pretty quickly. Rechargeable batteries are obviously a better option than regular batteries, but then you still have to take out the batteries, put them in the charger, and wait for hours for them to recharge. But the Penguin United rechargeable batteries are different. These packs replace the normal battery compartment on your remote, and the remote can sit directly in a docking station while recharging.

Why Pandora.com Sucks

June 8, 2007 Posted by Tara in : Reviews , 3 comments

For those of you who don’t know about Pandora, I am about to tell you what it is, and why it sucks. Pandora.com is a free internet radio service created by the Music Genome Project. The supposed draw of the service is that it customizes the music on a station that you create by choosing artists, songs and albums that you like. For example, if you enter Depeche Mode as an artist you like, Pandora will funnel songs and artists that are similar to Depeche Mode and their songs through the station. This sounds amazing, right? Well it’s not for several reasons:

Treo or Blackberry: Which one’s right for you?

June 4, 2007 Posted by Jeff in : PDAs/Smartphones, Reviews, Tips , 10 comments

Lately I’ve been getting this question a lot… “What’s better? Treo or Blackberry?” The answer isn’t so simple. It’s really a matter of personal preference and technical prowess. Even as someone who has owned both, it’s a tough choice.

I come from a Palm® background. I’ve used Palm® devices for about 10 years now, and in many different flavors. I will tell you up front that I am a little biased, only because of the 3rd party applications I’ve purchased over the years - that I can’t seem to live without - which I’ve transferred from one device to another. The reason I decided to combine the functionality of the Palm® and phone was purely self preservation. I was driving one day, talking on my cell, and I had to look up a number on my Palm®. I almost drove off the road.

QuickSeek by Kensington, the User-Friendliest of All

May 31, 2007 Posted by Tara in : New Products, Reviews , 7 comments

Once in a while, a device comes along that is so amazing, I would feel criminally negligent not to write about it. The Kensington Quickseek FM Transmitter for your iPod is one such device.

It is truly Elite

During the torrent recently in Texas, water actually fell from the sky, as if it were the blood of tech angels, doing battle with the forces of corrosion.  It fell and like acid, damaged the roof of the store I work at.  Damaged it to the point that the roof offered no shelter from the tidal forces in the sky. As we ran around like madmen trying to protect customer units, display models and the stock(failing; forgetting the plasma televisions in the warehouse, 2 million dollars in damage- we have insurance) we had forgotten our precious tech stations.  The keyboards were mostly protected by an overhang, but, the ones up front were left to bear the burden.  The monitor survived, and the hole leading to the power strip was protected, but the mouse and keyboard were sacrificed for their benefit.

Solar Charge That iPod!

May 22, 2007 Posted by Tara in : Reviews , 2 comments

I don’t even know why I own an iPod. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but its spends way too much time in the bottom of my bag dead, lifeless, uncharged. I can only plug it in to the computer where all of my iTunes are stored; pluging it in to an alternate computer will erase all of my data. I need another option: enter the MySoldius universal solar charger.

Drain your battery in style: Motorola Bluetooth Stereo Headphones HT820

May 18, 2007 Posted by Liz in : Reviews , 3 comments

I’ve been battling with cords since I was a wee geek - wrestling, untangling, bundling, unbundling, plugging in, unplugging, kicking out of the wall when I was just about to win that ladder game, and of course, trying to exercise with earbuds.

In my experience, you can’t exercise with earbuds. In fact, I blame earbuds for at least 20 pounds of body weight I could easily be rid of if only they made earbuds for girls. This is why I’ve been searching for wireless headphones since I first began to… legally download music.

Finally, I found the Motorola Bluetooth Wireless Stereo Headphones, which are great. They claim only 30 feet of range but I have transmitted easily across my office of probably around 1000 feet or more, with interference from other Bluetooth devices. It’s nice to put my phone in my pocket and forget it’s even there(until it heats up to the point that you can see the glow from my pocket.)

Why I ♥ FeedBurner

May 8, 2007 Posted by Bryan in : Opinion, Reviews , add a comment

I’ll tell you up front, it’s not just because they chose us for last Friday’s Publisher Buzz. (But they did.)

Really, it’s just because they’re so damn cool in every way possible.

FeedBurner is a free, web-based RSS service. From a webmaster’s perspective, it allows you to simplify the distribution of your site’s feed and track stats regarding the number of readers that subscribe to your site. For a fee you can also get more extensive stat tracking. From a reader’s perspective, using a FeedBurner feed essentially ensures compatibility with whatever feedreader you use, whether it is web-based, a part of your browser, or a standalone program. Snazzy New Uninterruptible Power Supply from APC

May 7, 2007 Posted by Jeff in : Reviews , add a comment

I was pleased to see the datasheet on the new APC Back-UPS RS 1300. It’s the latest backup power offering for small office/home office computing from APC. In addition to the genuinely reliable APC base circuitry they are world famous for, I was happy to see the new features added to their already stable and reliable designs.
