How-to: Get viruses and slow your PC to a crawl

April 18, 2007 Posted by Jeff in : How-to, Humor, Tips , 11 comments

virus.bmpMany articles tell you how to prevent viruses by adding this software or that piece of gear, etc., but still, people get viruses and other silly junk that renders your machine almost useless.

Well, I’m not taking that approach. I’m going to tell you exactly HOW TO get viruses and otherwise debilitate your machine. These are sure fire ways and practices to ensure your machine is functionally worthless. And when you recognize any of these practices in your situation, hopefully you will take steps to stop doing that.

Peripheral or Coffee Rest?

My family had a friend move to a foreign country about a year a half ago. As a going away present she gave us the Logitech QuickCam Messenger. I guess the goal was to keep in touch? To make a long story short: the webcam is still sitting in its box collecting dust in our office. Being the entreprenuer that I am, I decided to try and sell the device on Craigslist. I figured it would be an easy way to make 30 bucks out of something we didn’t even spend money on. Not so much. It turns out that in a year and a half the camera is only worth about 17 dollars (via pricegrabber.com), Logitech doesn’t even sell the product on its own website any more AND the closest up to date model is $30. I started to think, what happens to out dated models of products that have never been used? (more…)

Crazy Lady

I work at a tech help desk. A woman approached me today with a problem on her computer. It was filled literally to the brim (her hard drive was full) with malware and rootkits. I looked around on the desktop and found the culprit, Limewire.

I tried to explain to her that the program was akin to leaving the door wide open at her house. The conversation went as follows: (more…)

Whacking the Wii

March 28, 2007 Posted by Bryan in : Humor , 4 comments

Stick with me here.

In the beginning Nintendo visualized a great, revolutionary, “change the way we think about video games”, gaming console. Someone said “Such a revolutionary device needs a revolutionary name. It will be called a ‘Wii.’”

Then, during development came “With a console and approach this creative, we can’t just call the player profiles ‘avatars’, we need something better.” And the term ‘Mii’ was born.

Finally, thirty seconds after the first pictures of the new, sleek, “change the way we play video games”, controllers were released someone thought, “This is really unique, let’s call it something cool and related to the product it interacts with.” Which was followed by the first utterance of the word “Wiimote.”

Fast forward to twenty minutes ago, when, as I sat in front of my computer doing technology related research, like a holy grail shimmering over the towers of the Castle Corbenic descended upon me the next phrase that would become part of the sacred WiiWii lexicon:

All hail the sacred word: Whacking

Blessed be the sacred definition: (v.) To hack a Wii.

And the people shouted: “Let us whack our Wii’s in the name of all that is holy. Let our Wiiwhacking be an homage to all creation.

Fellow netizens, you have been given the Word. Go forth and promulgate.

What’s in a name?

Lots of website traffic apparently.

This is pretty funny. In the wake of the news regarding Google’s purchase of YouTube earlier this month, the pipe manufacturing website Utube.com saw a HUGE increase in traffic. The graph below shows the site’s page view statistics from Alexa.com. Note the peak around mid-October…

utube

I can just hear all those not-so-internet-savvy people going “I don’t see what the big deal is all about…”

And then I’m sure there were a few people thinking “What would Google need that much pipe for?”, which begs the question, “What *could* Google need that much pipe for?”

Server cooling? An underwater circus? Some nefarious plan to drain the oceans and control the worlds water supply?

9 reasons Yahoo! will never offer to buy your site for 1 billion dollars

Given News Corp.’s recent aquisition of MySpace for $568 million and the current $1 billion-ish talks bettween Facebook and Yahoo!, you may be wondering why a big corporation hasn’t offered you a billion dollars for your site.

It’s a valid question; and here are the nine biggest reasons:
