Removing the diabolical Smitfraud Trojan (Smitfraud-c)

smitfraud trojan.jpgI used a combination of a few things to remove the Smitfraud Trojan. (This is for Windows XP & 2000.) Here's what tools you will need: 1- smitfraud removal tool. I found it on the net at http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip. 2- Boot disk called BartPE (you have to make this), or any type of alternate boot disk that lets you have access to your files. 3- Spybot Search and Destroy. Now, here is what you need to do:

Peripheral or Coffee Rest?

My family had a friend move to a foreign country about a year a half ago. As a going away present she gave us the Logitech QuickCam Messenger. I guess the goal was to keep in touch? To make a long story short: the webcam is still sitting in its box collecting dust in our office. Being the entreprenuer that I am, I decided to try and sell the device on Craigslist. I figured it would be an easy way to make 30 bucks out of something we didn't even spend money on. Not so much. It turns out that in a year and a half the camera is only worth about 17 dollars (via pricegrabber.com), Logitech doesn't even sell the product on its own website any more AND the closest up to date model is $30. I started to think, what happens to out dated models of products that have never been used?

Crazy Lady

I work at a tech help desk. A woman approached me today with a problem on her computer. It was filled literally to the brim (her hard drive was full) with malware and rootkits. I looked around on the desktop and found the culprit, Limewire. I tried to explain to her that the program was akin to leaving the door wide open at her house. The conversation went as follows:

Holiday update files 2007-2009 for Outlook and Palm

Please don't laugh at me, but I still use Outlook 2000. Why? well, it works, and my motto is, don't fix what works. I don't believe in updating for updating's sake. What I DID notice is that I didn't have the usual holy week holidays listed in my Outlook calendar. Upon closer inspection, my preset holidays stopped on December 31, 2006. I decided at that point to create a new holiday file. After investigating it further, I was not happy with any I was finding on the web, so I would have to create one to satisfy me and the needs of the people I support.

My efforts led me to creating a file from various sources, with 61 holidays including most US holidays, most Christian holidays and most Jewish holidays. I even included a few major Muslim holidays for some of my Muslim friends. I also discovered that there are 3 different file formats, all very close but with some subtle differences. Here's how to create your own holiday file.

Urban Dwelling Device

skullcandy.jpgWhether or not you rock out to the latest iPod on the market or to an 8-track player that you found in your parents' attic, the Skullcandy Backphone Link can accommodate you. The device is a headset that plugs into both your music player of choice and your cell phone, so that you can leave your hands free and switch back and fourth between the two with the click of a button. The device works with any music player that has the standard 3.5 mm audio jack. There is a centrally located button on the microphone piece that you can use to switch back and forth between your music player and your phone. The microphone picks up sound well and doesn't have to be touching your lips to work.

Excel Things That Make Them Go "Oooooh!"

My job involves teaching people how to use Microsoft Office. Mostly, I teach classes on Excel, since when we ask what people want to learn, the answer is usually, “Excel, Excel and more Excel.” So we give the people what they want. Now, I don’t know everything about Excel, but I do know a fair amount. And I’m always amazed at which features users are most excited about. Turns out, it’s usually not the most advanced or complex features. In fact, some of Excel’s simplest features get the biggest reaction in our classes. So here I’ve explained how to do 3 things that have the biggest “Wow!” factor for our users.

Corporate Espionage via iPod, Keeping it Confidential

It always amazes me how clueless the average corporate management is about the safety of their proprietary data. Little do they know that anyone with an iPod, a smart phone, or even a thumb drive can walk out the door with all of the corporate and sensitive personnel files Security policies built into Windows Server OS fall far short of what is really needed in today’s environment of tiny high capacity data devices. One iPod plugged into a user's workstation can suck in almost 40 gigs of any type of files, and go completely unnoticed and undetected, in someone’s pocket, and right out the front door. It’s rather unnerving as a network administrator. As more devices hook to a PC, and more people have laptops, it’s very difficult to manage and maintain control of data and documents. There are however, some software and hardware solutions that go beyond the limited Windows security..

I hate Windows Vista. Hate it with all my heart. But, we have to live with it, so I have to fix it. We've run into the problem below frequently, and here's how to beat it.
