I am a Pleo stalker

pleo.jpgIn talking with a friend of mine the other day I discovered a great toy that apparently has a growing sub- culture all its own.  In her own words she is “stalking the toy”, so I had to dive in and see what its all about.  The toy is called PLEO and it is “autonomous robotic life form” based on a one week old Camarasaurus dinosaur (a lizzard from the late Jurassic period)

Pleo is not a remote controlled toy, rather it is a robot that has its own operatiing system with software that enables Pleo to act on its own and evolve throughout its 3 life stages- Birth, Hatching and Juvenille.  Pleo has devices that enable him to hear, to see, to sense touch, and to detect objects: a color camera, sound sensors, two infrared sensors, 14 motors, over 100 gears, eight touch sensors, and an orientation sensor.

The more time you spend with the robot, the more you are supposed to be able to bond with it (sounds like a scene from artificial intelligence).  Pleo has a battery that charges for 4 hours and lasts for approximately one hour.  Pleo is being released in October by UGOBE, a robotics firm based in Emeryville, CA.  If you are interested in having a Pleo of your own, you had better start saving now, the little herbavore runs about $350 dollars.  For more information visit http://www.pleoworld.com, you can find out more about Pleo and become part of the full fledged Pleo community.  I think I just became a Pleo-Stalker.
