Problem with VIA IDE controllers and Windows Update

Ok, so I have pinpointed the cause of an issue I was having at my job with 12 computers. Some were restores, some were new hard drives which were then restored… but they all ended up having an identical problem. After doing the last batch of updates on Windows Update, they ALL BSOD’ed. Two HPs. 3 Dells, a Gateway and three E-Machines. The only commonality was the repartition/reinstalls, so I did some research.

After re-restoring them, I did every update except the hardware updates and all went well. I even updated the BIOS on 2 of them, then re-did the hardware update with the VIA IDE controller, and voila… blue screen.

It turns out, when you do the update, the IDE controller reads the disk space incorrectly. The only way to fix this is to re-partition and re-install Windows (or restore it again) without doing the VIA IDE update. I also confirmed this with a Microsoft tech, and they should be pulling the update from their server soon, but I just needed to give people a heads up.

Microsoft has always done this sort of field testing.. Release it and see what happens, then pull it if it’s bad. It’s their dirty little secret.
