I am entertained by so little: Radica's Cube World

I never thought something so simple could be so entertaining. Enter: Radica’s Cube World “Stick People Sticking Together.” Cube World is made up of little (1.5 inch) plastic cubes that encase little animated stick people. Each simple stick person has a personality. For example Dusty, in the green cube, likes to clean. He is equipped with little vacuums and dusters. In fact, the characters have entire lives going on inside of each cube. They have bowel movements on little toilets while reading the newspaper, they fart, they cross into each other’s cube and punch each other repeatedly, they scratch themselves. Don’t get me wrong, their behaviors are not just “gross and violent” (yet completely amusing). They also do yoga, dance, hang out together, take showers, sleep and according to their “hobbies,” clean, listen to music, fix things and work out. A single cube is fun to play with, but the idea is to create a world by hooking all of the cube characters together. All of the cubes have magnets and motion sensors. The magnets allow you to link each cube with another cube by any of its four sides. When you put them together, the characters can enter into other cubes, up, down or to the side and interact with any of the other characters. The motion sensors in the cubes let you affect the characters behavior. If you are feeling hostile at work, just reach across your desk, grab Dusty, shake him and watch him fall down and get injured. These toys are great for your cubicle or office at work because they are amusing to watch AND they each contain a simple game. Instead of taking a coffee break, you can chill out and play a round of whack-a-mole. I only have two cubes, but it seems like the more you build, the more fun you will have. There is only one drawback: since the cubes contain magnets, they can cause distortion or color separation near CRT screens. So if you do keep them on your desk, keep them away from your computer.
